What AACSB Accreditation Means and Why It Matters

Not all MBA accreditations carry the same weight. Understanding what sets AACSB apart can help you avoid common pitfalls and choose a program with lasting career value.

What Is AACSB Accreditation?

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is the oldest and most widely recognized business school accrediting body in the world, founded in 1916. As of 2025, approximately 1,055 institutions across more than 65 countries hold AACSB accreditation — representing fewer than 6% of the world’s business schools

To earn and maintain accreditation, schools must demonstrate excellence in:

  • Faculty qualifications
  • Curriculum design
  • Research output
  • Student learning outcomes
  • Continuous improvement

The review process is rigorous and peer-led, with schools evaluated on a regular cycle to ensure standards don’t slip over time.

AACSB vs. ACBSP vs. IACBE

Three organizations accredit business schools in the U.S.: AACSB, ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs), and IACBE (International Accreditation Council for Business Education). All three are recognized by CHEA, but they differ in rigor and focus.

  1. ACBSP emphasizes teaching quality and is more common among smaller and regional institutions.
  2. IACBE is mission-driven and focuses on measurable student outcomes.
  3. AACSB is the most selective of the three, with the strongest requirements around faculty research, curriculum innovation, and global engagement.

Among employers — especially in finance, consulting, and multinational corporations — AACSB accreditation carries the most recognition and weight.

How AACSB Accreditation Affects Your Career

The career case for AACSB is backed by data.

According to AACSB’s own surveys

  • 88% of alumni from accredited schools said the degree improved their employability
  • 83% said it increased their earning power
  • 70% of Fortune 100 CEOs hold degrees from AACSB-accredited institutions.

Beyond employer perception, AACSB accreditation also affects credit transferability: graduate credits from AACSB-accredited programs are more widely accepted for transfer and for admission to PhD or DBA programs, giving you more flexibility down the road.

How to Verify a School’s AACSB Status

Don’t take a school’s word for it — verify accreditation directly through the official AACSB search tool

One common point of confusion: AACSB accreditation attaches to the business school, not to the university as a whole. A university may be regionally accredited (HLC, SACSCOC, NECHE, etc.) without its business school holding AACSB status.

Both forms of accreditation serve different purposes, and ideally, you want a program that holds both:

  1. Regional accreditation for the institution
  2. AACSB accreditation for the business school specifically

FAQs About AACSB-Accredited Online MBA Programs

Are AACSB-accredited online MBAs as respected as on-campus ones?

Yes. AACSB accreditation applies to the business school, not the delivery method. Employers evaluate your degree based on the school’s reputation and your skills, not whether you attended in person or online.

The GMAC 2025 Corporate Recruiters Survey confirms strong and growing demand for MBA graduates, with online programs well-represented among top-recruiting schools.

How many AACSB-accredited online MBA programs exist?

As of 2025, roughly 560 business schools in the U.S. hold AACSB accreditation, and the majority now offer at least some online or hybrid MBA format.

The exact count of fully online AACSB MBAs exceeds 380 programs, giving prospective students a wide range of options across price points and specializations.

Do all AACSB-accredited programs require the GMAT or GRE?

No. Many AACSB-accredited online MBAs have moved to test-optional or test-free admissions.

Programs like ASU W. P. Carey and the University of Central Arkansas don’t require the GMAT or GRE at all. Others, like Kelley Direct, offer waivers based on work experience or advanced degrees.

For a broader look at test-free options, see our guide to online MBA programs with no GMAT required.

Is an AACSB-accredited MBA worth the higher cost?

It depends on the program, but AACSB accreditation doesn’t always mean higher cost. The University of Central Arkansas, for example, offers an AACSB-accredited online MBA for approximately $9,000 total.

That said, when comparing similarly priced programs, the one with AACSB accreditation will generally be the safer long-term investment because it offers:

  1. Better employer recognition
  2. Stronger alumni networks
  3. More transferable credits

Can I transfer credits from a non-AACSB program into an AACSB-accredited one?

Policies vary by school, but it can be difficult.

AACSB-accredited programs generally accept transfer credits most readily from other AACSB-accredited institutions. Credits from ACBSP- or IACBE-accredited programs may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and credits from unaccredited programs are rarely accepted.

If you think you might transfer, start with an AACSB-accredited program to keep your options open.
